I've always had a passion for baking but was introduced to cake decorating in January 2009 by sheer accident or should I say out of necessity, not choice. It was my son Shayaan’s 12th birthday and he wanted an Xbox cake. There aren’t any great bakeries around where we live, so I looked online and the prices were shocking, around £150 for a sponge cake…! Well, I wasn’t going to pay that kind of money for a cake so I thought to myself, why don’t I try to make one? I mean people who decorate cakes are just people right, just like me and you, so I went shopping to buy all the things I would need after some research on the internet, some advice from Umber, a dear old college friend of mine (who makes the most amazing decorated celebration cakes) and the help of a very sweet lady I met at the store where I was shopping, who told me exactly what I would need (she also told me it wasn’t difficult to decorate cakes…yeah right, I said to myself, of course, I didn’t believe her at the time…!)
Well, I finally got down to it and it took me ages, because I did everything from scratch, and I got really stressed because it requires loads of patience…but I finally managed it…! And the look on my sons face when he saw it was totally worth it …that was enough for me to realise i'd done a good job, and when his friends turned up, their reaction was an added bonus….OMG Shayaan, did your mum make this? How did she make it? Aunty did you really make this yourself? Seems like i'd done pretty okay! (Especially since their mums were even asking me about my Xbox cake and where i'd taken classes a few days later…!). When I look back at that cake now, I see so many faults, so many ways it could have been better and more perfect, but then, it was my first decorated cake ever… and my son loved it, so I guess it was okay! |

So that was how I got started, totally self taught, and now im kind of obsessed with this art form. Anything and everything inspires me, people, hobbies, toys, books, electronics, cartoons, fabrics, wallpaper…! I like each of my cakes to be special, to represent the person its for, their style, their hobby…or just to represent the occasion. When I get an idea into my head, I just have to do it, otherwise im not at peace! And, im happiest when im cake decorating…although sometimes I do think I’ll run out of patience! ( I actually do most times, about half way to be exact) Cos patience…you need a lot of, to decorate cakes….and of course a very good electric beater…! ;)
My cakes, cookies, cupcakes and cake truffles (described as “little drops of heaven” by my cousin) are all baked from scratch, using fresh ingredients, so they do taste as good as they look, i've been told! All the decorations I use are hand crafted and edible, even the candle holders for birthday cakes, but not the candles of course! I do try to box them up real pretty, in whatever colours are requested, shiny paper, ribbons and bows and stuff. You just need to let me know the colour combinations…and your cake, cookies, cupcakes, cake pops, boxes, wrapping, ribbons, everything will match…hopefully, so that’s why I require at least 3-4 weeks notice cos I want everything to be perfect!
So please enjoy going through my website…and who knows, you may see something that looks good enough to order…! :) |
